Due to the Fire Marshall showing us no love, we are forced to temporary move gadfly entertainments calendar for the rest of this month to the Elkhorn Steakhouse... Please tell a friend...

(Tomorrow) Sunday, September 18th -
Mandarin Dynasty (Encinitas, CA), and Leyna Noel (Oakland, CA)
Check them out tomorrow at 6pm on KEOL 91.7fm for an interview and a special live perfrmance before the show...

Tuesday, September 20th -
Jeff Hanson (St. Paul, MN), and Derek Wildstar (local)
If you like Elliott Smith (RIP), and falsetto voices, you'll love Jeff Hanson... He's a KillRockStars Recording Artist who has had his music featured on the F/X original series, Nip/Tuck... This is an exceptionall somber/depressing night of music...

Friday, September 23rd -
Cornflower Blue (Boise), with Ruth Laurance (local), and Katman & Robin (local)
This is a special ALL GIRLS Night... Too many testosterone in la grande's limited live music scene so we decided to have a show dedicated to women, with all women performers...

Saturday, September 24th -
RFK Heise (Portland, OR), with Steve Mielke (local)
RFK Heise is from the now defunct band System & Station, and the new band, Protest Hill... This is his solo outing and personally I feel that if you like Ben Folds, you'll love RFK Heise...

Make sure you bring a friend or two to these shows... Cuz this is all about the "scene" and trying to get something started in this town... That's why every show is free & all ages... So use that leftover money to donate to the bands or buy their merchandise, cuz they're playing for nothing but your enjoyment, and gas isn't cheap... lol

gadfly entertainment presents
Hey, I figured I'd let everyone know what's going on in the entertainment calendar... All shows are at The Olde Towne Mercantile, free, and all ages... Doors open at 8pm, show starts promptly at 8:30...
We're just trying to start a "scene" in this town... Get more bands coming in, and more local bands playing out... So if you know someone with at least thirty minutes of at least 75% of original material, lemme know... We'll get them onstage...

1:53 am
just a reminder...

today, saturday the eightteenth of december, one week before x-mas, at eight pm, there will be a free show deep within the bowels of downtown la grande, inside earth'n'books basement...

a sort of experimental audio/visual experiment...
neither music nor film...
this experience will not excite you...
you will not dance to this...
there will be no lead singer making you weep, nor guitar hero rockin' your socks off...
this is charming chunks of collective chaos...
you'll probably be bored...
you'll probably be so bored you leave halfway through...
but you'll probably never see something like it again...
you could...
it's out there...
people doing the same exact thing...
both better & worse...
but you won't see it...
you probably won't even see this one...
like you didn't see the two before it...
even though they've always been free...
even though they've been easily accessible to the public...
and well advertised...
there will be free refreshments...
and you can always go somewhere else and get drunk afterwards...
although if you get drunk before hand...
(or at the very least "unsober")
you'll probably enjoy it much more...
and then maybe you won't leave halfway through it...

The cat lady...
I think every town has it's cat lady. You know, that one person that stands out for their eccentricities. Well, La Grande lost theirs. I heard about it a while ago, but I was waiting for the obituary to come out online so I could post it. Betty Strand, AKA The Cat Lady, walked all over town feeding stray cats clear up until the day she died. When I was little we were afraid of her. We thought she would steal our cats. As I got older, I shortly realized she was just a nice old lady with a soft spot in her heart for cats. Always back and forth to the store buying cat food. Consequently, she always found me at my job, Wal-Mart or the Dollar Store, and talked to me for like an hour. The strangest conversations I might add. Betty was pretty much deaf. I'm not sure she ever heard a word I said. The funniest thing was I would run into her on my way home from work, and she would talk to me about talking to me at work, only she wouldn't remember it was me. God I loved her. She was great. She lived at the other end of my building, and had been feeding all they strays in the parking lot for years. Those cats are totally freaking out now. I took a can of food down in remembrance of Betty. I noticed several other people have been doing the same thing. I wonder who the new cat lady will be... It'll be hard to replace Betty.

The ObituaryCollapse )

We still have Slither or Spoonman or whatever they are calling him now. He collects cans. I liked Betty better.

NaNoWriMo Meet and Greet
Hey folks,

I'm holding a Meet and Greet for National Novel Writing Month this Saturday (October 23rd) from 12 pm to 2 pm at the Highway 30 Cafe. This is for everyone who is interested in NaNoWriMo, but especially for anyone who has questions about it and would like some information from a veteran WriMo on what the experience is really like.

I'll be sitting downstairs and have a NaNoWriMo table tent. I'm also pretty easy to spot, as I have violet hair. So come down and talk writing with me!

The next event after this is the Kickoff Party!

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at eastern_or@nanowrimo.org.
